Although Grand Cayman is relatively small, it’s not small enough to walk from one end to the other, so you’ll need some kind of transportation. Plus, when it’s time to head back home, you need to know what to expect at the airport. So, with that in mind, let’s break down some of the best tips and tricks for traveling on Grand Cayman Island.
By Rental Car
If you’re planning on exploring as much of the island as possible, the best option is to rent a car. Rental agencies are across the street from the airport, and they’re relatively affordable and easy to get. All you need is a passport and a valid driver’s license to obtain a temporary license for your visit.
By Taxi or Bus
Taxis and buses are plentiful on Grand Cayman, and they can get you pretty much wherever you need to go. However, the island operates on a geographical system, meaning the rates vary based on your drop-off location, not the amount of time it takes. Also, most taxis and buses stick to the big cities and touristy areas like Seven Mile Beach and the Camana Bay Shopping Center. So, if you’re trying to explore the eastern and northern parts of the island, you might struggle to get a taxi coming back. Finally, when flying out of the airport, be prepared to spend time in the security line, and make sure to follow all guidelines. Otherwise, you might get stopped and delayed. Overall, though, the airport on Grand Cayman is much breezier than most major U.S. airports, and it’s relatively easy to get a taxi or bus.
By Bicycle or Walking
If you stay at a centralized resort like South Bay Beach Club, you’ll be within walking or biking distance from many attractions. Bike rentals are relatively common, and they’re very convenient when you don’t need to go more than a few miles.
