Your Guide to Driving on Grand Cayman

If you’re planning a vacation to Grand Cayman Island, you’ll need to know how to get around. While you could spend all of your time in Georgetown and Seven Mile Beach, courtesy of South Bay Beach Club, the island has so much more to offer, and driving is the best way to see it all. That said, before you get behind the wheel, there are a few things to know first, so let’s break it down for you.

Rules and Regulations to Remember When Driving on Grand Cayman

First and foremost, you can drive with a license from your home country. Visitors from convention countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, can drive for up to six months. Guests from other countries can drive for up to one month. Because the Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, everyone drives on the left, which is a big change for travelers from the U.S. Typically, the confusion occurs when pulling out of driveways or turning onto the street, so be aware. The typical speed limit on Grand Cayman is between 25 and 50 mph, but 15 mph in school zones.

Tips and Tricks for Driving Around the Island

Getting used to driving on the left is just the beginning, but the real test comes when entering one of the numerous roundabouts dotted throughout the island. Unlike the US, drivers enter on the left and rotate clockwise. Roundabouts can have one, two, or three lanes, so plan accordingly. It’s best to familiarize yourself with your route before getting into the car. While GPS is handy (assuming you have a phone holder, as the island is hands-free), you want to be able to pay attention to the road. Fuel costs are higher on the island due to its remote location and lack of oil infrastructure. So, if you plan on doing a lot of driving, budget accordingly.

Is Taking a Taxi or Public Transportation Worth It?

Taxis, shuttles, and public transit are great for short trips to the main cities on the western side of the island. However, if you want to reach the eastern half of Grand Cayman or want more flexibility with your itinerary, it’s best to rent a car.
