One of the best reasons to visit Grand Cayman Island is to visit our gorgeous beaches. Since all beaches in the country are public, you can spend as much time next to the water as possible during your stay.
That said, while our beaches are safer (and cleaner) than most other islands in the Caribbean, it’s always best to be prepared. So, here are some practical beach safety tips to keep in mind when planning your Cayman vacation.
Protect Yourself From the Sun
For the most part, the main element you must worry about during your visit is the sun. Since Grand Cayman is close to the equator, the sun here is much more intense than in other parts of the world, especially if you live further north.
While sunscreen is helpful, make sure to get a product that won’t harm the local reefs or ecosystems. Also, since sunscreen can wash or rub off, it’s often better to use hats and clothing for the best sun protection.
Wear Vibrant Colors
Although the waters off Grand Cayman are relatively calm and shallow, incidents can still occur, especially when you’re not paying attention. One of the main challenges is seeing someone in the water, as they can blend in, particularly when further offshore.
To make it easier to keep an eye on others (especially children), have everyone wear bright, vibrant colors that will stand out against the blues and greens of the ocean.
Don’t Touch the Wildlife
Beyond our beaches, another primary selling point of Grand Cayman is the access to various sea life. While they can be impressive to view up close, make sure you don’t touch any of these animals when you’re in the water. You can harm them and yourself, so it’s not worth it.
Be Aware of Jellyfish
If you’re visiting Grand Cayman from late March to June, you may encounter “Sea Itch.” This term refers to the small, invisible larvae of the local thimble jellyfish. You can minimize the problem by applying Safe Sea cream before heading out. If you do get stung, the effects should be mild, and vinegar will help reduce the sting.
Stay Hydrated
Although you may be surrounded by water, you can’t drink from the ocean. Since the weather will likely be hot and sunny, it’s crucial to stay hydrated all day. Also, keep in mind that alcohol can make you thirstier, so drink responsibly and don’t leave any garbage on the beach.
