One of the best reasons to visit Grand Cayman is to get as much fun in the sun as possible. If you know anything about the island, you’ve likely heard of one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, Seven Mile Beach. However, while this strip of coastline is certainly unbeatable, there’s another, equally enticing section of the island worth visiting: Rum Point. While George Town and Seven Mile get most of the attention, Rum Point is another spectacular destination on Grand Cayman. So, if it’s your first time to the island, here’s everything you need to know about it.
What is the Beach Like at Rum Point?
Although all of the beaches on Grand Cayman are known for their pristine white sands and balmy atmosphere, Rum Point is a step above. Walking on the sand here is like walking on silk; no flip-flops or water shoes necessary. The water here is also incredible, as you can see to the bottom as clearly as if it were glass. Best of all, much of the shoreline is shallow, so you can wade through the waves as you explore Rum Point.
What is There to Do at Rum Point?
First and foremost, the best way to experience Rum Point is to relax on the beach, preferably sipping on a rum cocktail. However, once you get a taste of that, other activities include:
- Watersports – Rent a jet ski, paddle board, or kayak and see the ocean from a different perspective. Since the water is often smooth and calm, you don’t need to worry about capsizing.
- Bioluminescence Tour – At night, the waters in the bay at Rum Point glow from bioluminescent algae. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
- Dine While Enjoying the View – Rum Point is home to some awesome restaurants, including Pirate’s Grill, the Rum Point Club, and Blue Flame.
Best Time to Visit Rum Point
One thing to note about Rum Point is that it’s often the disembarkation point for many cruise ships visiting the island. So, if possible, you want to avoid heading to this spot when ships are in port, as it will be more crowded than usual. Otherwise, the best times to visit are the same as the rest of Grand Cayman. December through April is the best weather, May through August is the hottest (with fewer crowds), and September through November is the wet season with the lowest prices.
Use South Bay Beach Club as Your Basecamp
Although South Bay Beach Club is located on Seven Mile Beach, it’s the perfect place from which to explore all of Grand Cayman, including Rum Point. Renting a car allows you to venture from one side of the island to the next, ensuring you’ll see as much as you can while creating lasting memories.
