Grand Cayman for First-Time Visitors: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
As far as Caribbean islands go, Grand Cayman is one of the best options, thanks to its safe status, gorgeous scenery, and friendly community. However, as with any new travel destination, it’s always best to know as much beforehand as possible. This way, you can avoid mistakes with packing, budgeting, and planning your itinerary. Fortunately, this guide will outline everything you need to know before visiting Grand Cayman as a first-timer. Even if you’ve been to the island before, these tips and tricks may offer some additional insight to help you maximize your vacation.
Budgeting
Compared to other island nations, Grand Cayman is more expensive, as its currency is closely aligned with the U.S. dollar. On average, the exchange rate is about 1 KYD to 1.20 USD, so your money won’t go much further. Because they’re so close, many places accept USD, so you shouldn’t have to worry about exchanging currency. That said, prices aren’t particularly higher than what you’d find in the States, and tipping culture at restaurants hovers around 10-15 percent, so you can save a little bit when eating out. Plus, if you stay in a condo-style resort like South Bay Beach Club, you can stock up on groceries and cook meals in your unit while you watch the sun set over Seven Mile Beach.
Getting Around
Although Grand Cayman is relatively small (about 90 minutes from one end to the other), it’s hard to reach parts of the island without a vehicle. If you’re planning to explore as much of the island as possible, it’s best to rent a car so you can go wherever you like without relying on taxis or buses. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that they drive on the left side of the road, so if you’re used to the opposite, it may take a while to adjust. Alternatively, if you stick to the island’s western shore and around George Town, you can likely walk or take short taxi rides wherever you need to go.
What to Pack
If you’re traveling during peak season (December to April), the weather is balmy and dry. The rest of the year, though, it can get hot, humid, and wet, so you’ll want to pack accordingly. Light clothing, rain gear, hats, and other items to handle bright, sunny weather. While sunscreen is necessary to prevent burns, you may want to wait until you arrive to buy some. Many places require reef-safe sunscreen, which is easy to find when you’re on the island.
Make Your Stay Even Easier at South Bay Beach Club
One thing you don’t have to wonder about is where you’ll stay. South Bay Beach Club is located on the Southern tip of Seven Mile Beach, so it’s close to many of the island’s top attractions and restaurants. Plus, our condo-style rooms give you the flexibility to create a home away from home and vacation however works best for you.
