Grand Cayman vs. Other Caribbean Destinations: Which Island is Right for You?
Planning a Caribbean vacation is always exciting, but the first thing you must figure out is where exactly you’re going to visit. Since the region is full of tropical island paradises, it can be hard to tell them apart until you do your research.
Fortunately, we’re here to help by breaking down some of the top factors to consider when picking an island destination. Although we’re partial to Grand Cayman, here’s how it stacks up against other Caribbean options.
Weather
One crucial thing to worry about when visiting this part of the world is hurricane season. Although other places in the region like Aruba are out of hurricane range, Grand Cayman is at risk of getting hit. That said, direct hits are quite rare, so you shouldn’t have to worry.
To plan accordingly, hurricane season lasts from June 1st to November 30th. Otherwise, the weather on Grand Cayman is relatively hot, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to the mid-90s throughout the year. The wettest months, though, are September and October.
Budget
One of Grand Cayman’s selling points is that it’s a well-developed, semi-upscale island. But that’s not to say it’s expensive, like Turks and Caicos. Overall, we offer a range of high-end and budget-friendly accommodations, and the cost of day-to-day items is comparable to what you’d find in the United States.
Activities
Some places, like Curaçao or Aruba, lean heavily into their beaches and resorts, meaning there’s not much else to do during your stay. On Grand Cayman, however, you can take advantage of various natural and cultural sites, such as the Cayman Crystal Caves or the Cayman Islands National Museum.
Beaches
Although all island countries in the Caribbean offer soft, white-sand beaches, only Grand Cayman is home to Seven Mile Beach, aka one of the best beaches in the world. Since the island has no rivers, the water stays crystal clear all year long, and a mild current means it’s safe for swimming and snorkeling, even if you’re traveling with little ones.
Safety
One issue that can plague Caribbean nations like the Bahamas or Curaçao is a relatively low safety rating. While these spots are not necessarily “dangerous,” they do require some extra caution when moving around, especially if you’re not part of a tour.
By comparison, Grand Cayman is highly rated for safety, so you can explore the entire island without needing to keep an extra sharp eye on your belongings.
